Bible Study Series - The Book of Daniel - Chapter 5

Introduction

I will be doing a series from the Book of Daniel. Daniel and his friends lived through crisis and captivity, yet continued to flourish. This chapter shows another moment where Daniel’s wisdom stood out in troubled times.

Key Points from Chapter 5

  • Belshazzar held a great feast for his nobles, wives, and concubines.
  • He used sacred vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem.
  • A hand appeared and wrote on the wall of the palace.
  • The king was deeply troubled, and none of the wise men could explain the writing.
  • The queen told the king about Daniel.
  • Daniel refused to be motivated by gifts and status, but still explained the writing.
  • That same night Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede received the kingdom.

Concluding Thoughts

  • Power does not free anyone to dishonor God.
  • Daniel showed prudence, wisdom, and freedom from greed.
  • His reputation for solving hard problems remained strong.
  • It is possible to flourish in uncertain and difficult times.
