Introduction

Service can be defined as the action of helping or doing work for someone. In God’s kingdom, we work for God, and our service is unto him, our Lord and Saviour, to build out his Kingdom.

Becoming a Christian or child of God, is easy. According to the Bible, we do so by confessing with our mouths, while believing with our hearts, in Him.

1. John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
2. Romans 10:9: That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

The Christian Walk

After becoming a Christian, the Christian walk begins. I became a born-again Christian at the age of 12 and was very excited. I prayed and read my bible and wanted to please God in my daily life. At the age of 18, I left home and traveled to Europe, from Africa, where I joined a church and in a very short while, became actively involved. My desire was to advance God’s kingdom by bringing more people into it.

Service Begins

At the church I joined, I got involved in the prayer team and the technical team. In the technical team, I was involved with cameras and projection setups, setting up live video feeds and overlaying graphics [animated pictures, text and other videos] in order to deliver a smooth service experience to worshipers. These tasks involved coming in very early in the morning, in all weather conditions, to unload the equipment. The church had no permanently leased building of its own, so services were held at different venues every other week. There were multiple services each Sunday and afterwards, all the equipment had to be put back into storage. Sunday was a full day and I loved every aspect of it.

My Typical Sundays

Sundays typically involved waking up at 5:30 am, getting to church at 6:30am, unloading and setting up the video, projection, sound equipment at whatever location we were at, for service, that week. I would then run extensive equipment tests and by 7:30 am, join in for prayers. The service would then commence at 8:00 am. After the final service, all the equipment would be put back into storage and then I would hang out with my friends on the team.

Tough Times

There were tough times when some equipment malfunctioned, and the team had to improvise. Or times when some team members could not make it in on time because of traffic and the few who had made it in had to make up for the shortage of hands. In all, we always did our work consistently as unto the Lord, with all our hearts, skills and professional wit.

Labor of Love

All these were done with love. Love for God. Love for God’s people, as the Bible says

1. Matthew 22:39: And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

In doing this I learned that God does not forget one’s labour of love and I made lasting friendships. I learned how leadership and the chain of authority works. I heard the word of God multiple times which challenged me to go deeper in God’s word. I saw people give their lives to Christ as a result my service.

So, if you belong to a good church and you want to be involved in service for God, I will encourage you to check out what departments your church has, and to join in. You will gain valuable experience which you can apply to life in general. You will also get to know more people and see how your input will change lives.

Divine Recompense

As you join in, in service, with consistency, remember that God will not forget your labor of love.

1. Hebrews 6:10: For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
